Music written from the heart, to last for generations, and to come back to time and time again.

Seagull by Saturday Sun is a future classic and has barely been off the stereo in the Caroline TV office since we came across the band back at the start of 2012.

Seagull has accompanied us everywhere popping up randomly on the mp3 player on the bus, in the supermarket and to dramatic effect while driving across a windswept and deserted part of the Cotswolds. In fact the only place we haven’t listened to Seagull, is by the sea – but then the weather has been lousy. Are we sick of it yet? Not a chance. And repetition is a serious test of just how good a song is. Which is why it would be such a crying shame if this perfect piece of music doesn’t get the audience it deserves. Because the quality of the music, the strength of the songwriting and the wonderful performance from Alex and Billy is just about perfect. And in a perfect world this would be a massive hit and become a radio staple for decades to come. On the other hand isn’t it brilliant to have such an amazing piece of art all to ourselves?

Saturday SunSo what about the song? Well I strongly urge you to click play, but if you’ve read this far and still need convincing….ok. Well for a start Seagull is a beautiful piece of lilting folk, yes perhaps a little inspired by Nick Drake (Saturday Sun take their name from a little-known Nick Drake track) but without relying on pastiche. Alex Hedley’s impassioned vocals will have you from the word go and the hairs standing up on your back of your neck (an overused phrase yes, but totally appropriate here). ThenĀ  Billy Merrick’s delightfully delicate echo-drenched guitar work gently chimes in. And all this before the first verse has even played out. It’s really is just one of those great musical moments.

This is music that is written from the heart, to last for generations, and to come back to time and time again. Perfect world or not, this can be our future classic.

The Seagull EP is out now on mp3 and as a limited edition CD of 100 copies. http://saturdaysun.bandcamp.com/
